Welcome back to part four of our five-part series regarding nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect. My name is Christopher Burk. I’m with the Burk Injury Lawyers. We help folks in Nevada, Arizona, and California with nursing home abuse, nursing home neglect. We are a full service personal injury firm. All right. Last time we had talked, what did we talk about? We talked about what people can look for regarding signs of nursing home abuse, nursing home neglect. Now it’s to the point of, all right, so you think there might be abuse and neglect, right? This is what we’re gonna talk about today. What can you do? What can…as a concerned family member, what is it that you can do? Well, just like any other negligence case, right, so if this is true, even if you have a car crash, or a slip and fall, or a trip and fall, or nursing home abuse, neglect, right, the first thing you can do, pull out your phone. Why is that? Every phone has a really good camera on it nowadays in 2020. Start documenting things, okay?
So if there’s an obstructed pathway from the bed to the bathroom, take pictures of the room, right? If you come in to visit your loved one and you keep seeing liquid on the floor, right? This is a common problem, cleanliness, right, dirty, slippery floors, take photos of it, document it. If you see problems with the sheets, right, if they are not clean, you see soiled sheets, and this is your loved one, it’s happening quite a bit, pull out the camera, obviously, you wanna make sure you secure the privacy of your loved one. But take photos of that, anything that you’ll need to use later. Anything that possibly the nursing home may deny later, you wanna make sure you have good photos of.
Also just keep in mind, like, while you’re doing this, make sure you keep tabs on how many people are coming in to see your loved one a day, right, document it. Like, if you’re there for four or five hours and nobody comes to visit, that’s odd. If nobody comes to change the sheets and you’re there a couple days in a row, that’s odd. You need to document it, send an email, put it in a journal, take a photograph. Notice the cleanliness when it comes to their food that they’re receiving, right? How does it look? Is it hygienic? Is the trays, the plates, all that stuff, is it clean? Little things, anything that seems out of order, anything that seems odd, that’s not what you would expect for how much money those places are getting each month, right, that your loved one is staying in take a photo, document it, send an email, whatever it is, just make sure you do something to memorialize it for later.
